Everly held up the bathing suit she’d purchased on a whim on their walk back from the bank. They’d passed one of those souvenir shops that half the inventory is spilling onto the sidewalk. Thinking she’d buy something silly for Cade, she’d stepped into the store.

Finnian cleared his throat from the doorway. “I know you’re against the ocean, but they have a rooftop pool. We can go if you’d like. Might help you relax.”

She glanced at the window. “It’s nearly dark.”

He smirked. “People swim at night. The pool has lights.”

“Do you have a suit?”

“Yes.” A shred of excitement lit his eyes. “Are we going, then?”

She held up the yellow bikini top. “As long as you promise not to compare me to Claudia.”

“If you’re wearing that, there’s not another female I’ll be thinking about. I promise you. Get changed, darling. I’ll be right back.”

She walked to the bathroom, avoided the mirror, and slipped into the yellow bikini. After the past months spent in isolation, the exposure of wearing nothing but a swimsuit in front of someone should have wrecked her. It didn’t. This was Finnian. She twisted in the mirror. Would he think she looked sexy? Would he want to touch her?

She pulled her hair down from her ponytail, shaking it out. “That looks like crap.” She brushed it out, somehow making it even flatter against her head and highlighting the uneven ends from her at-home haircut.

Screw it. She pulled it back into a ponytail. She slipped into a pair of shorts and left her room, refusing to overanalyze herself any longer.

He held two towels in one hand and wore a bright blue and red swimsuit without a shirt. He slowly flipped through the pages of the trust folder.

“Find anything interesting?”

He continued to stare down at the paper in his hand, a line of concern between his brows. “Maybe.”

“What is it?” Had he found a clue to Charles’s purpose behind this stupid trust? “We don’t have to go swim—”

He flipped the folder closed and barked out a laugh. “No way I’m letting this shit get in the way of a swim with you, darling.” He looked up, his eyes darkening as he ran his gaze down her body. His throat moved as he swallowed. “Let’s go.”

“It’s been nearly three years since I swam.” Everly followed him into the elevator. “Don’t let me drown.”

“Oh, I won’t.” He draped a heavy arm across her shoulders. “You stay with me.”

She wrapped a hand around his waist, enjoying the smooth muscle under her fingers. His body held so much power that she loved. That strength had saved her. Hopefully, that was the last time he’d have to risk anything for her.

The pool area was empty. Everly exhaled as Finnian set the towels on the bench near the shallow end of the pool. No one to judge her. No one to watch her.

Except him.

He waited patiently by the steps, looking out over the Miami skyline. “I’ve never enjoyed being down here, but it is pretty all lit up at night.
